Literacy NarRative

As a child, both of my parents made it a point to read to me and take me to the library often. The act of reading aloud to me did not die out when I was able to read on my own, though my appetite for more books was never satiated. I remember the last book my mother ever read aloud to me. It was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and my mom, no fan of fantasy, got four chapters in before she gave up and insisted I read it on my own. I often listen to audiobooks of the Harry Potter series and I find that Stephen Fry is much better narrator than my mother was. I plan to pass along my Harry Potter books to my future children. As my husband and I were avid readers as children, we plan to read daily to our future children, hoping they will spend their childhoods as lost in stories as we were.

I am far from being a first generation college student. Thanks to things like inherited wealth and white privilege, I don’t think there has been a generation of my family that did not attend college since the invention of the university. Even my grandmother, who comes from first-generation German immigrants in Depression Era Nebraska, found a way to go to college. In fact, if I am first generation anything, it would be first generation community college student. Both of my parents have earned master’s degrees and I am a perpetual community college freshman.

In this semester, I think that I have improved my literacy skills. Though I was fairly confident before the start of this class, I would say that my knowledge regarding comma usage has improved. I now place a higher emphasis on not multitasking, rather taking the tasks I have to accomplish one step at a time. I believe that I have grown some significant dendrites thanks to this class.
